Sport has the ability to bring people together allowing them to achieve social good and transcend boundaries. Walking down any street in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, it would not be uncommon to see children playing their own version of the national game, with whichever materials they can pull together. While the politics of these regions is turbulent, Cricket is a united factor and can be used to promote change. Sports allows improvements in physical and mental health and wellbeing, it teaches social skills and discipline.
2017 saw the South Asian Diaspora living in the UK come together to mark a historic Cricket final between India and Pakistan. University Common Rooms streamed the game with students from all backgrounds in green and blue jerseys, sitting side by side enjoying a friendly rivalry and appreciating the sportsmanship of the other.
To mark 70 years since the Independence, Shahid Afridi, former Pakistan Cricketer, tweeted a message of peace. As a result, he was overwhelmed by messages of peace and love from his fans across the border in India.
